While I understand this sentiment, I find it extremely disturbing. There is nothing wrong with requiring citizens to have a national security card. We already number each citizen, and no one has complained about that, even though when I think about it I am sure people would have complained if social security numbers had been proposed today. We are leaning so far towards protecting insignificant and inconsequential individual rights that we are coming apart as a country. Even that statement itself comes across as taboo, for we have been taught to hang blindly and uncompromisingly on to each individual right we have.

This information compounds the human tragedies involved -- personal and societal. The social network of emergency response agencies learned enough from that one to evacuate people EARLY in these ones, which helped keep the death toll way down. I have Northern California biases also, but the urban myth is that the whole state is about to separate from the rest of the United States and sink into the sea. . |
